Director Jared Hess has dropped a major hint that a sequel to A Minecraft Movie is already in the works.
Disclaimer: Spoiler Alert!
After the film’s massive $313 million global box office debut last weekend, the buzz around continuing the blocky adventure is only growing.
In an interview with Deadline, Hess shared his excitement over the possibility of returning to the pixelated world: “We had so much fun making this movie… It seems like there’s already talk about it happening, so I’m super excited.”
Fans who stayed through the end credits got a surprise tease: the introduction of Alex, Minecraft’s other iconic character, alongside Jack Black’s Steve. Hess confirmed that Alex would be central to any sequel. “That’s the one that we will be bringing to the table without a doubt,” he stated.
The first film follows a group of four misfits – Garret (Jason Momoa), Henry (Sebastian Hansen), Natalie (Emma Myers), and Dawn (Danielle Brooks) – who are pulled into the Overworld and must master it to get home. They team up with Steve (Black), whose commitment to crafting and combat brings the absurd world of Minecraft to life.
Hess, best known for cult hit Napoleon Dynamite, credited the film’s success to both the loyal Minecraft fanbase and the absurd fun of the game’s universe: “The game itself is so creative, but also ridiculous and funny and absurd. That was the appeal: how can you do a ridiculously fun and funny adventure movie in this world?”
One standout element, Hess says, is Jack Black’s commitment to the role: “He plays everything with so much passion. We’d say, ‘Put more mustard on that,’ and he just takes it to 11 every time.”

With Minecraft’s legacy and the film’s stunning opening weekend, the possibility of a sequel seems less like a rumor and more like an inevitable reality. For now, fans are left buzzing over Alex’s arrival and wondering what’s next for their blocky heroes.
A Minecraft Movie is currently in theaters and continues to dominate the box office. Stay tuned for more updates on a potential sequel and everything happening in the ever-expanding Minecraft universe.
