Matthew McConaughey is back on the big screen, and he swears he didn’t mean to disappear for four years.
The 55-year-old actor last headlined a film in 2021, but his return in The Rivals of Amziah King is proving worth the wait. Speaking with Collider, McConaughey explained he didn’t set out to take a break from acting. “I didn’t feel like I needed a break. I just ended up taking a break,” he said. “Did other things, wrote a book… enjoyed that kind of storytelling.”
When The Rivals of Amziah King landed on his desk, it hit all the right notes. Quite literally.
“It’s got language, poetry, wild humor, and a real musicality,” McConaughey said. “At the heart, it’s a love story. Amziah King is a mentor, a misfit-gatherer, a wild a** with a good heart.”
He was especially drawn to how the story felt rooted in people and places he’s known personally. “I knew the people. I knew the places. I’ve lived on the outskirts of towns like that. A lot of folks may look at the world in this movie and go, ‘Who are those people?’ But to me, they’re real.”
In the Western drama, McConaughey plays a father figure reuniting with his foster daughter, until tragedy strikes. His performance includes six original songs, which he performs in the film.
“There’s poetry in that guy,” he said of Amziah King. “In the way he talks, moves, listens. This film is musical, not just because we sing, but because every relationship has a rhythm. Every scene has a beat. I could hear the meter the first time I read it.”
While McConaughey’s return to movies wasn’t planned, it’s clear The Rivals of Amziah King struck a chord deep enough to bring him back. “It’s a story I wanted to be part of,” he said. “And I’m damn glad I am.”
The film premiered at South by Southwest and is already building buzz for its unique blend of gritty Americana and offbeat charm. For fans, it’s a reminder that when Matthew McConaughey finds a story that sings, he shows up ready to play the part.
