Trump Demands New Census That Excludes Undocumented Immigrants

Donald Trump is once again rattling the table, this time with a new call for a new US census that ignores undocumented immigrants altogether.

On Thursday, Trump posted on Truth Social that he’s ordered the Department of Commerce to start working right away on a “new and highly accurate CENSUS” based on new numbers and what he vaguely referred to as “results and information obtained from the Presidential Election of 2024.”

His most dramatic line? “People who are in our Country illegally WILL NOT BE COUNTED IN THE CENSUS.” That single sentence has the potential to ignite a legal, political, and constitutional firestorm.

Historically, the US census counts every last resident, including those who are here without their permission. That’s how it has always been done, because the Constitution demands that the census count the “whole number of persons” in each state, not citizens or documented folks. But Trump wishes to depart from that entirely, and it isn’t his first attempt.

Earlier in 2020, while still on his first term, Trump tried with all his might to include a citizenship question on the census. The Supreme Court stopped him, deeming the justification “contrived,” so he retreated, kind of. He instead instructed federal agencies to collect citizenship information using available records. That effort too fell apart.

But now, with an eye toward 2026 midterms and increasing pressure within the Republican Party to rework congressional maps, Trump appears to be reviving that old ambition, this time going even further by proposing a complete new census.

Opponents claim this action is all part of a larger plan to redistribute political power from blue states to red states and cut down on representation in the high-immigrant population areas. And Trump’s declaration is not occurring in isolation, it comes as Republican-governed states are coming under mounting pressure to redraw maps to benefit themselves, with the White House pushing secretly, according to reports.

Redesigning the census would have a direct effect on congressional seats, federal funding, and political influence. If illegal aliens were not counted in the population, big-immigrant-state giants like California, Texas, and New York would lose Congressional seats, while Republican-leaning states in rural areas might pick up the slack. That is quite a serious redistribution of power, based on who gets counted.

The Commerce Department has yet to officially comment, and it’s not clear how they’d even conduct a new census beyond the constitutionally required decennial one. Legal commentators are already cautioning that any effort to conduct a parallel census or tamper with the official count will result in immediate and epic-sized court challenges.

Nevertheless, Trump appears not to be bothered. His Truth Social message represents a campaign-style pledge to his followers, a rallying call that strikes immigration, national identity, and political authority, all in one. Whether it’s legally possible or simply a political gimmick, it’s already making headlines.

And this time, Trump is making it a commentary on the results of the 2024 election. That half of his statement gave people pause. What’s he supposed to mean by employing “information gathered from the Presidential Election”? No word on that yet, but another level of controversy added to what was already a contentious proposal.

What is clear: The fight over who counts in America is far from over. As legal scholars, immigrant rights groups, and political analysts begin to pick apart the announcement, Trump is betting this bold move will energize his base and put Democrats on the defensive heading into the 2026 cycle.

But with the Constitution, the courts, and public opinion possibly against him, this census drama could become ugly in a hurry. For the time being, everyone’s waiting to see what the Commerce Department does next.
