Following three seasons, the Sex and the City reboot has come to an end. On August 14, HBO Max broadcast And Just Like That…’s season finale, one final chapter for Carrie Bradshaw, Miranda Hobbes, and Charlotte York Goldenblatt.
Although absent from the series finale, Samantha Jones’ character still saw emotional farewells, surprising plot turns, and beginnings for both classic favorites and newer characters such as Seema Patel, Lisa Todd Wexley, and Anthony Marentino.
For Carrie Bradshaw, the series finale was about a path of loneliness and self-discovery. Following a cringe-worthy dinner alone at a futuristic restaurant and a poignant conversation with Charlotte about being lonely, Carrie realized she may have to learn to love life as “just me.” Her Thanksgiving became awkward when relegated to sit alone among Miranda’s long list of guests, but she escaped home to a much more modest pleasure: pie, music, and contemplation. In a moving moment, Carrie rewrote her book’s epilogue, stating, “The woman realized she was not alone – she was on her own.” The episode concluded with Carrie dancing into the future, free and unencumbered.
Miranda’s journey highlighted messy truths and the need for support. Dinner with ex-husband Steve showcased their growth as co-parents and future grandparents. Subsequently, Miranda put her girlfriend Joy first when she was told her dog would be receiving emergency surgery. In the end, Miranda had struck a balance between family drama, awkward Thanksgiving guests, and her growing relationship, recognizing her life was not how she envisioned it, but still worth embracing.
Charlotte’s narrative went for humor and family warmth. Having re-established intimacy with Harry after his successful fight against cancer, she was both matchmaking and extolling family life. The York Goldenblatt Thanksgiving concluded on a heartwarming note when Rock reminded Charlotte that family is diverse, giving her a sense of belonging and love.
While Seema grappled with Adam’s avoidance of marriage but wondered if her desire for commitment was mere social conditioning, Lisa navigated career choices and marital difficulties before reaffirming with Herbert, despite frustration. Anthony and Giuseppe’s on-again-off-again relationship brought comic relief, as their disagreement over commitment resolved in laughter – and pie in the face.
The finale offset bitter goodbyes with sparks of hope. Although not all characters ended up getting their resolution, the series left its women – and men – to figure out love, autonomy, and connection in ways authentic to their stories. As Carrie danced into her own narrative, And Just Like That… concluded as it started: centered on identity, friendship, and the serendipitous nature of life in New York City. The series is now available to stream in full on HBO Max, bringing down the curtain on another chapter for these beloved characters.
