Adria Arjona isn’t afraid to admit that acting school changed her life.
The 33-year-old actress, known for her roles in Hit Man, Blink Twice, and Pacific Rim Uprising, credits her time at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute with helping her survive a tough childhood.
“Acting school kind of saved me,” Adria told Collider. “I had a pretty rough upbringing. There were parts there that were not the happiest, and acting really came in and saved me and taught me how to express myself through what I do.”
Growing up, Adria didn’t have a clear direction. She knew she loved movies but couldn’t quite figure out what she wanted to be. Her dad, however, saw something she didn’t.
“Every movie made me want to be something else or learn a new task,” she said. “One day, my dad was like, ‘I don’t know exactly what you think you’re going to be, but I think you might be an actor.’”
Turns out, he was right. Adria found her place in Hollywood by taking on a wide range of roles that reflect her creative instincts more than any planned-out career strategy.
“Every job you take, you’re telling a story to the world of the kind of artist that you are, so you have to stick to your guns and be really truthful to what you believe in,” she explained. “It’s mostly, also, for me, to not be bored, right? To play different characters and to show the world that I’m more than just one thing.”
Even though she’s worked on major films, Adria admits she doesn’t always make her career decisions with a grand plan in mind. “I wish I was more of a strategic actor when it comes to making choices,” she told Empire. “But I’m just more excited by the women that I get to embody.”
One of her most talked-about roles was in Hit Man alongside Glen Powell. What started as a quick meeting with her co-star turned into an hours-long conversation. That instant connection translated into on-screen chemistry.
“It was supposed to be a one-hour meeting. We ended up talking for five hours,” Adria recalled. “Chemistry comes from trust, and I think from our first meeting I just knew I could trust [Glen]. We created a space for us to play and be weird and sexy and funny.”
Directed by Richard Linklater, Hit Man was a significant project for Adria. She remembers feeling nervous before meeting the acclaimed filmmaker.
“My hands were sweaty. I was really trying to play it cool, and that lasted for about ten minutes,” she said with a laugh.
From acting school to starring alongside A-listers, Adria Arjona’s journey shows how finding your voice, on screen or off, can truly change your life.
