If you were hoping for more content in Mortal Kombat 1, it’s time to manage your expectations.
NetherRealm Studios has officially announced that the 2023 fighting game won’t be getting any additional DLC characters or story chapters moving forward.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), NetherRealm addressed the community directly, stating: “We are hearing players’ requests for continued game support of Mortal Kombat 1, and, while we will continue to support Mortal Kombat 1 through balance adjustments and fixes, there will not be additional DLC characters or story chapters released from this point on.”
That means the game is essentially feature-complete, aside from any minor gameplay patches or balancing tweaks. While this might be disappointing for fans who were expecting future content drops or expanded storylines, NetherRealm is already shifting gears to focus on its next title.
The studio added, “We understand this will be disappointing for fans, but our team at NetherRealm needs to shift focus to the next project in order to make it as great as we possibly can.”
Since its launch, Mortal Kombat 1 has seen some solid crossover content. Characters from DC’s Peacemaker and Prime Video’s The Boys have been added to the game, expanding the roster and keeping things fresh. But with this announcement, it’s clear that what’s currently available is all players are going to get in terms of major new content.
So, what’s next for NetherRealm? While nothing official has been announced, rumors are heating up about a potential Injustice 3. Now that MultiVersus, Warner Bros.’ platform brawler, is shutting down, speculation is swirling that NetherRealm’s focus is returning to the Injustice universe.
Dataminer MultiverSusie hinted at this possibility, cheekily stating, “‘MultiVersus’ shutting down is an injustice, then doing it all again is another. Leaving me without any leaks is yet again another injustice.” The final punchline? Just the number “3” – a pretty clear tease, if you’re reading between the lines.
For now, Mortal Kombat 1 players can expect ongoing technical support but no new characters, stages, or storylines. It’s a clean wrap for the game’s post-launch phase. Whether or not Injustice 3 is truly on the horizon remains to be confirmed, but fans of NetherRealm’s style of gritty, cinematic fighters should keep a close eye on what’s coming next.
One thing’s for sure: the chapter has closed on Mortal Kombat 1 DLC, and the studio is moving full speed ahead.
