Kroger Closing Stores in August: See Locations Shutting Down in 4 States

Kroger, the nation’s largest supermarket chain, is getting ready to shutter several of its stores later this month as part of a larger restructuring initiative.

The company made the announcement after revealing earlier this summer that it would be closing roughly 60 underperforming stores across the country over the next 18 months.

In Kroger’s first-quarter 2025 sales report, Interim CEO Ron Sargent stated the closures are part of cost-cutting measures aimed at driving profitability. He further added that underperforming stores were spread throughout the nation and comprised a small percentage of Kroger’s overall footprint.

On the first day of its fiscal year, Kroger had 2,731 stores across the nation. Closing 60 stores, the reduction represents approximately 2% of the company’s stores. Down-sizing notwithstanding, Kroger underscored that it has not abandoned its focus on growth, investing between $3.6 billion and $3.8 billion this year in new stores, remodels, and capital projects.

The firm further stated that staff at closing stores would be provided with jobs at nearby stores wherever practicable, in a bid to reduce job losses.
