Doctor Who Star Michael McStay Dies Peacefully at 92

British actor Michael McStay, best known for his roles in Doctor Who and No Hiding Place, has sadly passed away at the age of 92.

A statement posted by a representative on Facebook confirmed the news on May 20, sharing that the beloved actor died peacefully in his sleep following a lunch with his children on May 18. “It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Michael McStay, an actor of the highest standing, talented writer and family man,” the statement read. “It was a privilege to have known Mike. RIP.”

Michael McStay’s legacy is rooted deeply in British television. He gained major recognition for playing Sergeant Perryman on ITV’s classic detective series No Hiding Place, appearing in over 80 episodes. It was this role that cemented his place in the golden era of British TV drama. Fans also remember him from his guest appearance in Doctor Who, where he played Derek Moberley in two episodes. Despite his short run on the sci-fi hit, McStay clearly felt a connection to the show’s loyal fanbase. In one of his last interviews on the Doctor Who: Toby Hadoke’s Time Travels podcast in May 2024, he said, “The sort of fans that you get on a show like Doctor Who are your friends. They want to like you, they want to like the show. It’s a great feeling. It’s a great bunch of people to be a part of in a way.”

Though his time on Doctor Who was brief, McStay cherished the experience and the community that came with it. He seemed genuinely moved by the show’s continued impact and how it had welcomed him into a unique kind of family. That kind of appreciation doesn’t come from just showing up on set – it’s clear McStay had a true love for acting and the people who supported his work.

Outside of TV, McStay also had roles in several films, including Robbery in 1967 and The Stick Up in 1977. On the small screen, his career spanned decades with appearances in shows like The Black Arrow, Park Ranger, Spy at Evening, EastEnders, and Ted and Alice. He was the kind of actor who quietly made his mark – never flashy, but always memorable.

In 2011, McStay made his final on-camera appearance in Coronation Street, taking over the role of Alan Hoyle from actor John Woodvine. That appearance marked the end of a long and steady career in front of the camera. He wasn’t one of those actors constantly chasing the spotlight, but he had staying power – the kind of longevity that’s rare in the entertainment industry. He said it best himself on the podcast: “You have to want to do it. I’ve always wanted to do it. And I had some good friends along the way that helped me.”

McStay is survived by his wife, actress Jennifer Clulow, and their two sons. The way he spent his final day – peacefully, after sharing a meal with his children – sounds like a reflection of the calm and grace with which he seemed to live.

His fans, colleagues, and loved ones will remember him not just for the roles he played, but for the humility and warmth he brought to them. Whether it was sci-fi, crime dramas, or soap operas, McStay left his mark with quiet strength and undeniable talent.
